Day 11 — The Humility That Lifts You

God loves humility. Just look at Jesus and how He made His appearance on planet earth…in the humblest of ways. Philippians 2 tells us that we are to have the same attitude that Jesus had, one that regards others, is not conceited, and is not selfish. Both the Old and New Testaments are replete with passages about being humble instead of prideful. After all, pride is how we got in this mess in the first place!

But contrary to much popular Christian teaching, while God loves humility, He does not put humbling you on His daily agenda. Being humble is a responsibility that He entrusts to you and it is just that, a response to His ability and recognition of all He has done for you. You see, in Christ, God exalts you and lifts you up! He made you a new creation, holy and righteous, and He is pleased with you. He gave His Son for you and to you…the greatest gift imaginable! Humility is not thinking poorly of yourself but properly of yourself and the proper view is the one that God has…and it is awesome! So, humility is the fruit of reception and in Christ we have received His very Life! Now that will humble you.

Reflect

  1. If humility is not thinking poorly of yourself but thinking properly of yourself, how does God’s awesome view of you actually humble you?
  2. Where have you mistakenly believed that God makes it His daily mission to push you down or humble you, rather than lift you up?
  3. How does it feel to receive the staggering truth that God didn’t just give His Son for you, but actually gave His Son to you?

Humble yourselves in the presence of the Lord, and He will exalt you.
