Day 30 — Truth’s Greatest Display

We live in a world searching for truth, rejecting truth, and seeking to redefine truth all at the same time. As the church, we have an incredible responsibility to live out and proclaim the truth. It can be very difficult, hurtful, and frustrating to be truth tellers in a world full of lies. We are also called to love one another…not just those in the church but outside as well.

The fleshly thinking of the world is that truth and love cannot always be compatible. Rather than disagree with someone or risk the potential of their rejection because of the truth, just love them and withhold or even compromise the truth, is the faulty thinking. True love, the unconditional, agape love of God never compromises truth, it upholds it! The love of this world that is void of truth to protect feelings and lies at any cost is no love at all. Truth is not sacrificed at love’s altar but neither is love to be forfeited in the truth. That’s why Ephesians tells us to speak the truth in love…they go hand in hand. The truth is God loves you! The truth is He loves the world! His love is the greatest defense of truth because His love is the greatest display of truth!

Reflect

  1. The world often tells us to water down the truth to protect people’s feelings. Where have you been tempted to choose a hollow version of love over real, grace-filled truth?
  2. Truth without love can become a weapon, and love without truth can become empty. Which side of that coin do you tend to lean toward when dealing with others?
  3. How does knowing that God’s love is the ultimate display of truth empower you to speak honestly and lovingly in your relationships today?

Little children, let us not love with word or with tongue, but in deed and truth.
