Many of us have heard that Jesus should be first in our lives. The idea sounds right, but it can quietly turn the Christian life into a ranking system. God first, family second, work third, then everything else in its proper place. The problem is that Jesus never offered Himself as one compartment in an organized life. He offered Himself as life.

Christ is not merely your highest priority. He is your source, your meaning, your identity, your righteousness, your peace, and your hope. He is not asking to be added to your schedule like an important appointment. He has joined Himself to you so completely that your life is now found in Him.

Jesus is not one part of your life to manage; He is the life from which everything else receives meaning.

This is incredibly freeing. If Christ is your life, then life does not have to be squeezed out of your job, your marriage, your children, your achievements, your health, or your circumstances. Those things may be beautiful gifts, but they are not meant to be your source. When we demand life from created things, we eventually become anxious, controlling, disappointed, or afraid.

But when we know Christ is our life, we can receive everything else as gifts instead of making idols of them. Our relationships can be enjoyed without carrying the weight of being our identity. Our work can have purpose without becoming our worth. Our circumstances can change without changing who we are.

Jesus does not want to be prominent in your life while something else gives you life. He is your life. That means you are not empty, unfinished, or lacking the deepest thing you need. You have Him, and in Him, you have life.

A Prayer for This Week

Lord Jesus, thank You that You are not merely part of my life, but You are my life. Thank You for freeing me from demanding identity and security from things that cannot carry that weight. Teach me to receive my family, work, and circumstances as gifts while resting in You as my source. Amen.
