Ask people what makes someone a Christian, and you’ll often hear a list. Go to church. Read your Bible. Be a good person. Avoid certain things. Try to live the way God wants you to live.
But what if Christianity was never meant to be a list of things you do for God? What if, at its very core, Christianity is something entirely different?
Religion gives you a set of rules to follow in hopes of pleasing God. The gospel reveals a God who has already come near, given Himself to you, and made you His own. Religion puts the burden on you to produce a life for God. The gospel tells you that Christ is your life.
Paul captured this reality when he wrote, “Christ lives in me” (Galatians 2:20). Think about that for a moment. Jesus didn’t simply come to teach you how to live. He came to give you His life. He died for you, rose again, and now lives in you. You don’t have to work your way towards God’s acceptance. In Christ, you are already accepted, already His, and already secure in Him.
And that changes everything.
Following Jesus is not about trying to measure up, keep God happy, or prove that you’re a good Christian. It is a relationship of trust with the Father who loves you. He has given you a new heart, with desires that flow from the life of Christ within you. You get to walk with Him, learn to trust Him, and discover the freedom of living from who you already are in Him.
That doesn’t mean you’ll never struggle or wonder what to do next. It means you don’t have to navigate life under the pressure of earning God’s favor. You can walk hand in hand with your Father, trusting that He is at work in you and that His life is not something you have to manufacture.
Christianity isn’t about trying harder to become someone God will love. It’s about discovering how much He loves you and how transformed you are because of that love.
Religion is something you carry. Jesus is Someone who carries you.
So take a breath. You don’t have to prove yourself to God today. You can simply trust the One who has already given Himself to you, and walk in the freedom of knowing that Christ is your life.
A Prayer for This Week
Father, thank You that You did not give me a system, You gave me Your Son. Thank You that You love me and that Christ lives in me. Free me from measuring my life by a checklist and instead remind me to trust You and walk in the freedom of your grace and love. Amen.
Romans 8:15 For you have not received a spirit of slavery leading to fear again, but you have received a spirit of adoption as sons by which we cry out, "Abba! Father!"
