When life gets hard, one question seems to surface almost automatically: What is God trying to teach me? It’s an honest question, and usually it comes from a good place. We want to find purpose in our pain. We want to believe that there is something God wants us to learn through what we’re going through.
And yes, God does teach us. He instructs us. He corrects us. He grows us. James tells us that when we face various trials, the testing of our faith produces perseverance. So there is no question that God can use every season of our lives to grow us. But sometimes, without realizing it, we can reduce God to only a teacher. Hardship comes, and we start looking for the lesson. Suffering shows up, and we begin reviewing our lives, wondering what God is trying to correct. We start thinking that if we could just figure out what He wants us to learn, maybe the difficulty will finally go away.
What if God is after more than just trying to teach you a lesson? What if He isn’t grading how you respond to life but is actually sharing His life with you when life happens. Now that would be a lesson to learn! That changes everything. God is your loving Father and His heart is for you and He is present in you, no matter what season you're in.
Life in a broken world brings hard things. Trials come. Relationships break. Plans fall apart. We experience disappointment, loss, temptation, uncertainty, and pain. Not every hardship is God trying to teach you a specific lesson, and your suffering certainly is not proof that God is against you. The cross proves that God is always for you.
He is not withholding His presence until you learn the lesson. He is present in the middle of it. That's why James can tell us to consider it joy when we face various trials. The joy isn't necessarily found in the trial itself. The joy is found in knowing that the testing of our faith is not a threat to us because the God our faith rests in is completely trustworthy and for us. He is producing perseverance in us, not because we are strong enough to navigate everything life throws at us, but because He is our Father and He has us.
Think about that for a moment. You don't have to figure everything out before you can have peace. You don't have to discover the hidden meaning behind every difficult circumstance. You don't have to look at your pain and immediately ask, What did I do wrong? You can look at your circumstances and ask a different question: Who is God to me right here?
He is your Father. He is your comforter. He is your life. And He hasn't gone anywhere.
Maybe that's actually the greater lesson, not simply what God wants to teach you through this season, but what He wants to show you about Himself in it. He loves you. He accepts you. He is with you. And He has you.
So if you're walking through a hard season right now, you don't have to solve it before you can rest. You don't have to understand it before you can trust Him. And you don't have to navigate it perfectly to find peace. Your Father has you. Whatever life throws at you, remember He has got it because He has got you!
A Prayer for This Week
Father, thank You that You are not distant when life is hard. Thank You that You are my loving Father and not merely my instructor. When I am tempted to search my circumstances for a hidden message, help me look to You instead. Steady my heart in the truth that You have me completely, in every season. Amen.
Psalm 103:13 “Just as a father has compassion on his children, so the LORD has compassion on those who fear Him.”
