Should I be further along in my Christian walk?

Have you ever caught yourself thinking, I should be further along by now?

Maybe you look at a recurring struggle, an impatient reaction, or a fear that just won't seem to go away, and you wonder, "If I really believed God, wouldn't I be doing better than this?" Or, "If I were a good Christian, I wouldn't be struggling with this."

Those thoughts can feel convincing, but they often come from a standard God isn't holding over you.

God is not disappointed with where you are today. He knew every part of your story before it unfolded. He knew your victories, your struggles, your questions, and the places where growth would take time. Nothing about your journey has caught Him by surprise. Nothing!

God relates to you through Christ, not through your rate of progress or your changing feelings.

You're not growing toward being right with God. You're growing from the rightness Jesus has already given you.

That changes everything. Instead of trying to earn God's approval, you're learning to live from it. Growth isn't about becoming more loved by God. It's about discovering what has been true of you all along.

Think about a one-year-old. We don't become frustrated because they haven't mastered everything yet. We expect them to be exactly where they are. How much more did your heavenly Father know exactly where you would be today? God is not impatient with His children. He is not tapping His foot, disappointed that you are not further along by now.

So the next time you hear that familiar thought—I should be further along by now—remember this: you're growing, you're learning, and you're already right with God because of Jesus.

You're not behind with Him. You're His beloved child. And that's very good news.

A Prayer for This Week

Father, thank You that You are not disappointed with where I am today. Thank You that I belong to You because of Jesus, not because of my progress. Free me from comparison, shame, and the pressure to be somewhere You never expected me to be. Teach me to trust Your patient work in me and to take my next step from the security of knowing I am already loved, accepted, and righteous in Christ. Amen.
