Where is God when life falls apart?

Somewhere along the way, many of us picked up the idea that if we really trust Jesus, life should go pretty smoothly. Maybe we never actually said it out loud, but somewhere in the back of our minds we believed it: But what happens when it doesn’t? The diagnosis comes. The marriage gets difficult. The job ends. The plans you were counting on suddenly change. And underneath the pain comes another question: If God is really with me, why does my life look like this?

The truth is, trusting Jesus has never meant that life will be easy. Just look at Jesus. He trusted His Father perfectly, yet Scripture calls Him a man acquainted with grief and sorrow. He was misunderstood, rejected, betrayed, and abandoned. Jesus never promised us a life without trouble. In fact, He told us that trouble would come. But then He said, “Take heart; I have overcome the world.” Trouble is part of living in a broken world, but trouble is never proof that God has left you.

Sometimes religion gives us the idea that if God is really with us, everything should work out the way we want it to. And when it doesn’t, we start wondering what we did wrong or whether God has somehow pulled away. But the gospel tells us something so much better. God is not saying, “I am with you only when life goes well.” He is saying, “I am with you no matter how life goes. I am with you right in the middle of this.” His faithfulness is not dependent on your faithfulness. Even when we are faithless, He remains faithful.

So when we say, “My life is falling apart,” what do we really mean? We mean that circumstances are hard. Our health, relationships, finances, plans, and expectations can all change. And those things matter. The pain is real. The disappointment is real. The grief is real. We don’t have to pretend otherwise or try to put a spiritual spin on it. But there is something we need to remember when everything around us feels unstable: our life is not ultimately found in the arrangement of our circumstances. Our life is found in a Person.

Paul says, “Christ is your life.” This is deeper and better than the allure of perfect circumstances. This is God’s promises of His presence, power, and peace in any situation. Christ is your life means that when everything around you is shaken, you are still secure. You are still forgiven. Still loved. Still righteous. Still His. Still held. Nothing that happens to you can separate you from Him.

So maybe today you feel like your life is falling apart. Maybe you don't have answers, and maybe you don't know how the circumstances are going to change. You don't have to figure all of that out today. Just remember this: God has not gone anywhere. He has not abandoned you. He is right there in the middle of it, and Christ is still your life. Your circumstances may change, but your life in Him cannot. And when you know that, you can breathe again. You can rest. Not because everything is okay, but because you are okay, He is for you and He is your life.


A Prayer for This Week

Father, thank You that You do not leave when life gets hard. Thank You that my life is hidden with Christ in You, secure beyond anything this world can take from me. When difficulties come, keep me from seeing them as a verdict on Your presence. Remind me that You are with me, remind me who I belong to, and let me rest in Jesus as my life. Amen.
